The Laws of the Public Policy Process. No.6
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008
A couple of years ago Donal Blaney ran a weekly column on ConservativeHome entitled “The Laws of the Public Policy Process”. These 45 rules were devised by Morton Blackwell – the Godfather of the American conservative movement – and they come from his decades of experience in the policy process. Every week YBF will discuss one of these laws in the context of some current political news.
Law No. 6: Give ‘em a title and get ‘em involved.
This is particularly relevant during Freshers’ Week, as CF branches are trying to attract new members and get their committees in order. Without being disparaging, giving someone a title really is an excellent way to make a person feel valued. Instead of just asking a 1st year to hand out leaflets round their halls, offer them the position of Freshers’ Representative for Conservative Future. Of course, handing out titles to make people feel involved doesn’t only happen at university. Who was given a title recently, in a bid to win over the Blairites and make them feel involved? Arise, Lord Mandy.
