Sonia Chohan has earned a reputation as one of CF’s ebst Area Chairman. Here, she answers YBF’s Quick Interview.
What motivates you to be involved in politics?
The right of an individual to challenge the state through the judiciary and parliament and force changes in government policy and law.
In 10 words, explain why you don’t like the Labour government.
They are: micro-managing, bumbling, untrustworthy, inexperienced trade unionists drunk on power.
Describe yourself in 5 words.
Flammable: Please handle with care.
What’s your favourite political quotation?
Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
- Ronald Reagan
If you could punch/slap a political figure (from past or present) who would it be, and why?
Gordon Brown for managing to con the electorate into thinking he is the saviour of the economy when it was his ill-conceived economic policies that destroyed it to begin with.
If you could go for a drink with a political figure (from past of present) who would it be, and why?
William Wilberforce – the original reformer and politician of change.
What would you do with £5,000,000?
I would buy one of Tony Blair’s after dinner speeches, and if there is any money left-over I might buy one of Cherie’s books.
If you had to name the biggest single problem from the last 10 years of Labour government, what would it be?
A government that feels it is above the electorate and relies too heavily on spin, media manipulation and outright lies to cover up for their mistakes rather than addressing core issues.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
Haifa in Israel – it would challenge any misconceptions you have about the ability of people of different backgrounds to live together peacefully.
If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?
It has been a long day, so I should be sleeping.
If you could repeal a law, which would it be?
I would abolish inheritance tax. It is a form of double taxation, and simply disgusting that people work hard and pay taxes during their lifetime, to then be taxed again upon death.
If you could create a law, what would it be?
I would create a law requiring the bankers who contributed to destroying our financial stability to be investigated and held accountable for their actions.
What don’t you like about politics?
Apathy – no one challenges this government enough. People feel that they have lost their voice and with the government relying heavily on voter apathy, they are able to get away with scandal and sleaze time and time again.
Which blogs do you read daily?
Guido, Tory Bear.
Obama or McCain?
Obama for daring to believe the impossible and making it a reality.
When do you think Brown will call an election in the UK?
Brown will cling onto power as long as he possibly can, so 2010.
What would you like to see Cameron be stronger on?
Challenging Brown and Darling’s new found status as economic saviours of the world.
What do you most hope to achieve in life?
To die without any regrets.
