Quick Interview: Will Bickford-Smith
Thursday, November 6th, 2008
Will Bickford Smith is the Chairman of Nottingham University Conservative Future.
What motivates you to be involved in politics?
The belief that Britain can do, and be, so much better.
In 10 words, explain why you don’t like the Labour government.
They are “stale, greedy, short-sighted, arrogant, incompetent, boring, socialist, naive, moronic” fools.
Describe yourself in 5 words.
Easy-going, passionate, nice chap.
What’s your favourite political quotation?
It is hard to pick one as I have so many, though I do particularly like the following words displayed on a 1929 election poster:
“Let the Lighthouse of Conservatism save S.S. Britain from the Rocks of Socialism”
If you could punch/slap a political figure (from past or present) who would it be, and why?
John Prescott. He’s a hypocritical, greedy and disgusting man.
If you could go for a drink with a political figure (from past of present) who would it be, and why?
David Cameron so that I could try and persuades him to give me a job when I graduate!
What would you do with £5,000,000?
I would save most of it, though I would probably buy a car as they have all plummeted in value. I also quite fancy a holiday to Jamaica!
If you had to name the biggest single problem from the last 10 years of Labour government, what would it be?
Their ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to policy without really knowing what the problems are that face British people across the country.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
I have not been to too many exotic places as of yet, so I would probably say home, on a cold winter’s day, in front of a blazing fire with the rest of my family.
If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?
Reading for my essays- I have two due in, in 12 days!
If you could repeal a law, which would it be?
EU Human Rights Act- I think each state should have their own Bill of Rights.
If you could create a law, what would it be?
Not so much a law I don’ think, but I would like to see the British flag displayed in far more places, and I believe that all pupils should have to take British history as a mandatory GCSE.
What don’t you like about politics?
How too many people take themselves far too seriously, from far too young an age. We can all have fun, and be interested in politics, without acting like we are the next leader of the Party!
Which blogs do you read daily?
Tory Bear
Obama or McCain?
I have been shot-down many a time for this, but I was supporting Obama. America needs change, just as Britain needs change. Governments come and go in cycles; unfortunately it seemed like the Republicans had run out of fresh ideas and the outcome was Obama’s victory. I am slightly more anxious about the Democrat dominance in Congress as well as the White House!
When do you think Brown will call an election in the UK?
2010
What would you like to see Cameron be stronger on?
Attacking Brown- this man has ruined our country!
What do you most hope to achieve in life?
To live life with no major regrets, have proud parents, and to have a happy marriage and family.
