The Dangers of Facebook

Exactly eleven months ago today, YBF’s Director of Operations blogged on ‘the dangers of Facebook.’ Today, his warning takes on fresh relevance. A story that appeared first of all on ToryBear, and then in The Mail, The Sun, The Independent and The Guardian reminds us all of the need to be careful in the way we conduct our online presence.
Here is an extract of that blog post, now nearly one year old:
“For those of you wondering, my Facebook profile has the tightest security available (i.e., it can’t be viewed by people I’m not ‘friends’ with) but I still wouldn’t treat it as a private diary – under the mistaken impression that only my closest friends look at it. It’s a question of responsibility and common sense in an age where people seem obsessed with putting all their information on publicly viewable websites. Facebook has many uses; it connects people across the country (very useful for CF), it can act as a platform for protest, it can track down old friends and it can make planning an event easy. BUT, it can also serve to provide ammunition to those that would seek to discredit you, and it should not be treated as a ‘private sanctuary’ where you can say and do as you please.”
