YOU can help. If your university is trying to pass such motions, or if you know of campuses where this is going on, contact YBF immediately. Email Christian (christian@ybf.org.uk) and YBF can swing into action with its unique combination of resources, supporters and campaign experience. Don’t let them get away with it.

Because the last 10 years of his spending will be paid for by the next generation, and that is just plain unfair!

If you could go for a drink with a political figure (from past of present) who would it be, and why?

Williams Hague – To see if I could do the 14 pint challenge!

What would you do with £5,000,000?

Give £1m to charity,

stick a £1m in a pension fund,

£1m on a luxury flat in London,

£1m on a country pad

and £1m for a few years without having to work…

If you had to name the biggest single problem from the last 10 years of Labour government, what would it be?

Spending our future and Pensions. It might be a depressing thing to think about at my age, but Labour have turned a first class pensions system into the worst in Europe – all in 10 years! The reality is we will all have to work until we are 80 and even then retire with nothing. Labour have abolished every incentive for individuals to save for the future.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

I don’t know, to holiday you can’t beat America for an all round package, but if I were to choose somewhere to spend the rest of my life it would be London – for a city it’s amazingly diverse, and offers everything you could ever need.

If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?

Well, I’ve just clocked off from work, so probably having a drink or two down the pub. I work for ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) in Westminster, working with the Energy and Waste Management panels to filter into government consultations and influence policy.

If you could repeal a law, which would it be?

Hunting ban, ID Cards, 28-day detention with-out trial… there are so many bad laws, badly worded laws and laws that fail to meet their purpose that we need to review huge chunks of legislation.

If you could create a law, what would it be?

I probably actually wouldn’t make any new laws. not for a while at least. We have plenty of scope to change things without changing the law all the time. The volume of legislation in the last 10 years is equal to that of the previous 50. We need to get away from new laws being the answer to every problem.

What don’t you like about politics?

People not answering questions. As a politician you have a duty to represent the people and be accountable to them. If you don’t answer questions I think you fail in that duty. Every week watching PMQs I find myself more and more irate at the Prime Ministers unwillingness to give an answer and instead stating an unrelated fact that (he thinks) makes Labour look good!

Which blogs do you read daily?

I only really check out Politicshome on a daily basis; but normally log on to Tory Bear, Con Home and a few others a couple of times a week.

Obama or McCain?

McCain

When do you think Brown will call an election in the UK?

2010. No Question.

What would you like to see Cameron be stronger on?

Tax reform. We need to show we are prepared to change the way tax is levied and simplify the tax system. It’s a hard issue to discuss with voters though, and far from a ’sexy’ vote winning policy. I know why he isn’t stronger on it, but I live in hope that in will be in the manifesto come 2010.

What do you most hope to achieve in life?

Happiness; I know that sounds very simple, but I think there is very little point doing anything in life if you are unhappy about it.

… George Osborne, for saying what we were surely all thinking about the UK economy. Osborne has said that it is his job to “tell the truth about the UK economy” - and this is particularly welcome at a time when the Government is a million miles from the truth. This leads me nicely on to…

This week’s Zero is…

…Lord Mandelson, for so blatantly avoiding the truth about the UK economy. This morning, he told Radio 4 that “Government has not caused this recession.” This line is just another line being lapped up by the BBC, along with Brown and Darling’s “we’re well placed to weather the recession…” or “we have low debt…” The Conservatives are doing well, but they need to be much stronger in attacking these Labour falsehoods.

If the problems of the world weren’t so serious I’d have hoped for an Obama victory all along. The Republicans have to re-group and revive. But the problems are huge.

What matters now if who Obama puts into positions of responsibility. He might go for respectable people like Holbrooke. Or he might go down the route of putting Power, Malley etc into some kinds of positions - which would be catastrophic.

The problems facing America beyond the economic ones are Afghanistan / Pakistan and Iran. History will judge the Obama’s Presidency on whether or not he stands strong against Iran and forbids it - and by extension the whole region - from going nuclear. Presidencies do not get many words for their epitaphs. Obama’s will be whether or not he leaves behind him a nuclear middle-east. We must all hope that he does not.”

What motivates you to be involved in politics?

To represent those disaffected with politics and encourage them to get
involved. The individual can make a difference.

In 10 words, explain why you don’t like the Labour government.

They are megalomaniac, interfering, naive, expensive, out-of-touch idiots.

Describe yourself in 5 words.

Freedom-loving, small-state individual.

What’s your favourite political quotation?

“I think we’ve been through a period where too many people have been given
to understand that if they have a problem, it’s the government’s job to
cope with it. ‘I have a problem, I’ll get a grant.’ ‘I’m homeless, the
government must house me.’ They’re casting their problem on society. And,
you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and
women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except
through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to
look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People
have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations.
There’s no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an
obligation.”
Margaret Thatcher

If you could punch/slap a political figure (from past or present) who would
it be, and why?

John Prescott because he is a simply appalling, arrogant fool who is
grotesquely offensive and has cost this country a fortune. And it would be
a dose of his own medicine.

If you could go for a drink with a political figure (from past of present)
who would it be, and why?

Peter Mandelson, preferably somewhere warm, with convivial company from the
Urals to discuss Aluminium tariffs and how he manages to survive so many
metaphorical train wrecks that have littered his career.

What would you do with £5,000,000?

I’m not sure if I’ve got the maths right but I’d aim to buy land in
southern Peru, establish a vineyard and bring up lots of little Rocks
(’pebbles’, boom, boom!)

If you had to name the biggest single problem from the last 10 years of
Labour government, what would it be?

The utter confusion over their own agenda; from day one they chased opinion
and deluded themselves with their own rhetoric whilst spending like ever
other Labour administration, namely recklessly in the wrong areas.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

Arequipa, Peru.

If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?

Working!

If you could repeal a law, which would it be?

The Smoking Ban.

If you could create a law, what would it be?

That no new law could be created without repealing another.

What don’t you like about politics?

Party politics; the replacement of style over substance and the simply
abhorrent practice of avoiding arguments and debates by resorting to
shallow, headline-grabbing guff.

Which blogs do you read daily?

Guido, Slashdot, The Register, Blogzilla, Samizdata, Failblog.

Obama or McCain?

McCain but I don’t think it’s going to happen…

When do you think Brown will call an election in the UK?

I still think there’s a strong possibility of a June 2009, to coincide with
the European and Local Elections.

What would you like to see Cameron be stronger on?

Tax cuts.

What do you most hope to achieve in life?

A happy, healthy family.
