This is the start of a new regular feature for www.ybf.org.uk, selecting ridiculous ‘degree’ courses at colleges and universities around the United Kingdom. These courses are subsidised by every taxpayer in the country, and serve to increase the cost of academic courses for everyone else.
This week: BA Adventure Media, Cumbria University
Essentially a glorified 3 year outward bounds experience, this course claims to have:
“…been developed and designed to provide a high quality learning experience for those students who aspire to work within the outdoor industry and utilise adventurous based media as a platform for their work.”
The course will teach you skills that will give you:
“…an ability to work effectively with groups in dynamic and often adventurous environments; the capacity to design and plan safe educational activities and to support and facilitate personal development through connections with the outdoors.”
I’m sure a lot of prospective students like the sound of 3 years spent climbing, canoeing, kayaking and mountaineering with a camera on your back, but there cannot be enough jobs on Richard Attenborough’s TV programs for every single graduate of this course.
Cumbria University claims that graduates have gone on to work in HM Forces, the emergency services and teaching. None, apparently, in adventure media…
